Beijing, China

The Beijing International Sustainability Conference 2024 was held in Beijing, China on 21 November 2024. Hosted by the IFRS Foundation’s Beijing Office and organised by CRRC Group, the event received support from China Construction Bank, China Central Depository & Clearing Co., Ltd., Bova Technology (Beijing) Co., Ltd., Xinhua.com, the Economic Observer and Sina Finance.

The conference focused on the theme ‘Path to Global Baseline’ and reflected on the latest developments from the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB), with 240 in-person attendees and nearly 6 million online views.

The IFRS Foundation would like to thank all delegates and speakers for their participation in, and contributions to, the conference.

Speakers represented diverse types of organisations, such as government departments, state-owned banks, non-governmental organisations, global accounting bodies, multilateral development banks, private companies and regulatory institutions.

These are some of the important points highlighted by the speakers:

  • investors are seeking sustainability-related financial information provided alongside financial statements to provide a comprehensive financial reporting package. These reports—which can effectively reflect a company’s sustainability-related risks and opportunities as well as insights into management performance—will benefit capital markets by providing investors with decision-useful information for investments and resource allocation.

  • the IFRS Foundation has made significant progress in advancing the adoption of its sustainability-related disclosure requirements around the world, and the ISSB Standards have established a global baseline of sustainability-related disclosures benefiting both capital markets and investors. In Asia, various markets are actively taking steps to gradually introduce the ISSB Standards into their legal and regulatory frameworks to enhance capital market transparency and international investor confidence.

  • the work of the Chinese Ministry of Finance and other relevant ministries in drafting and developing the Exposure Draft of Chinese Sustainability Disclosure Standards for Business Enterprises—Basic Standards, which is based on the ISSB Standards. Speakers reflected that this marks an important step for China in enabling companies to provide high-quality, comparable information for the market.
