Former General Manager of the Italian Banking Association Giovanni Sabatini has been appointed to serve as a Trustee of the IFRS Foundation. Mr Sabatini brings a wealth of international finance experience, from both public and private sector appointments.

The Trustees are responsible for the strategy and governance of the IFRS Foundation and oversight of its two standard-setting boards—the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) and the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB). The 22 Trustees are appointed from various countries and professional backgrounds.

Mr Sabatini has more than 40 years’ experience in finance. He joins the Trustees after serving as General Manager of the Italian Banking Association for 15 years. He previously served at Consob, the public authority responsible for regulating the Italian financial markets, and as Director General of the banking and financial system at the Italian Ministry of Finance.

His extensive experience leading international organisations includes chairing the Executive Committee of the European Banking Federation, the International Organization of Securities Commissions’ (IOSCO) working group on secondary markets regulation and the European Association of Central Securities Depositories. He has also co-chaired a joint working group by IOSCO and the Bank for International Settlements.

Mr Sabatini has been appointed with immediate effect; his term ends 31 December 2026.

Commenting on the appointment, Chair of the Trustees Erkki Liikanen said:

I am delighted that Giovanni will serve as a Trustee of the IFRS Foundation. His vast experience from the financial sector, working across the public and private sectors and in international fora, will be a real asset to the organisation.

Giovanni Sabatini said:

I am honoured to serve as a Trustee and look forward to contributing towards the Foundation’s important mission. The work of the Foundation’s standard-setting bodies, the IASB and the ISSB, is fundamental for the efficient functioning of capital markets globally.

Mr Sabatini’s appointment has been approved by the IFRS Foundation Monitoring Board, which provides a formal link between the Trustees and public authorities.
