About the role

Reports to: Chief of Communications and External Affairs

Job purpose: As the Interim Communications Director for the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB), you are tasked with leading the development and implementation of a robust communications strategy. This strategy will engage the ISSB’s varied stakeholders effectively and uphold the ISSB’s objectives within the disclosure landscape. The ISSB communications strategy helps deliver the IFRS Foundation communications programmes.

Principal responsibilities

Strategic communications development and execution

  • Develop and execute targeted communications plans that clarify the purpose, progress, outputs and outcomes of the ISSB, reflecting the broader sustainability-disclosure landscape.
  • Ensure the ISSB’s communications enhance and align with the IFRS Foundation’s wrap-around communications strategy and aligns with the communications of the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB).
  • Collaborate with the ISSB leadership to develop communications approaches that deliver on the evolving strategy of the ISSB and address the priorities and needs of key stakeholders.

Narrative and messaging

  • Lead the development and refinement of the ISSB’s core narrative.
  • Adapt narratives and messaging based on stakeholder feedback and evolving conditions.  
  • Ensure that all communications content is aligned with the ISSB’s core narrative and objectives.  
  • Guide internal stakeholders on integrating the core narrative and key messages into their own communications.  
  • Develop bespoke communications plans and messages, working with ISSB members and relevant colleagues, around key activities such as consultations and project launches.

Content creation and distribution

  • Oversee the creation of all ISSB content and manage its distribution across the IFRS Foundation’s channels.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across the Communications and External Affairs team to maximise the reach of the ISSB’s messaging through appropriate channels.
  • Monitor media coverage, social media sentiment and other stakeholder feedback to evaluate the effectiveness of communications plan and adapt communications strategies as needed.

Continuous improvement

  • Utilise data-driven insights and stakeholder feedback to gauge the effectiveness of communication strategies and refine approaches.
  • Foster a culture of reflection and improvement by sharing insights and lessons learned with colleagues to facilitate good communications.
  • Measure the effectiveness of communications plan using data-driven insights and stakeholder feedback to inform future communications strategies. 

Team leadership

  • Manage and mentor colleagues with responsibilities for ISSB communications, including the Communications Manager—Asia and the Communications Associate, providing guidance, support and opportunities for professional growth.
  • Oversee the timely delivery of communications projects.
  • Ensure the team’s objectives are aligned with the IFRS Foundation's communications strategy and the ISSB’s priorities
  • Bring a strategic vision to the ISSB’s communications coupled with a proactive ability to manage both day-to-day operations and crisis situations.  

Skills, attributes and experience required

Qualifications and experience

  • Significant experience working in the sustainability disclosure landscape.
  • Strong understanding of the capital markets, including the relevant ‘players’ in the disclosure landscape.
  • Experience working with the C-level on execution and delivery of communications strategy.
  • Demonstratable ability in communicating complex issues clearly.
  • Ability to grasp new ideas quickly and confidence in being able to hit the ground running in taking on the role.
